Pokemon - The Johto Journeys - A Brand New World (Vol. 39): Taken on its own terms, Pokémon is an agreeable if somewhat cutesy children's entertainment that emphasizes friendship, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. These new adventures (the third television series) take Ash, Misty, and Brock to the land of Johto, where they encounter new Pokémon and people, including Professor Elm, a former student of Professor Oak. (Professor Elm gives first-time trainers their initial Pokémon in Johto.) In "The Double Trouble Header," Ash is challenged by Casey, a novice trainer, after he dismisses her favorite baseball team. The comic villains Team Rocket (Jessie, James, and Meowth) trick Casey into demanding a rematch so they can kidnap Pikachu and Chikorita. When Team Rocket's scheme inevitably backfires, Ash and Casey part as friends. Woodruff the Forest Ranger offers a lesson in ecology in "A Sappy Ending." Team Rocket has built a robot to collect the sweet tree sap several types of Pokémon live on, upsetting the ecological balance of the local forest. Ash, Misty, and Brock help Woodruff route the villains and acquire a Heracross as a bonus. Suitable for all ages. --Charles Solomon
Pokemon - Friends and Rivals (Vol. 26): The virtues of friendship, like loyalty and trustworthiness, are put to the test in this trio of Pokemon adventures starring Ash and his new confidant, Richie. In the first episode, "A Friend in Deed," the menacing Team Rocket pulls off "the biggest poke-haul of all," kidnapping the trainers' pokeballs in order to rig the Pokemon League in their favor. Pokemaniacs Ash and Richie join forces to thwart the deceptive scheme. In the end, however, a twist of fate pits friend against friend when Ash learns that his next Pokemon match will turn Richie into his opponent. This cliffhanger continues in the second episode, "Friend and Foe Alike," when Ash wonders if his friendship with Richie can survive their upcoming match. A funny thing happens on the way to the stadium though, as Team Rocket's shenanigans continue. Winning and losing gracefully is the theme of the final episode, "Friends to the End," when Ash and Richie discuss the lessons they have learned from defeat. But wait, a calamitous crater dug by Team Rocket traps the friends, giving them a chance for a final dual, this time as cohorts. In the end, viewers realize that the Team Rocket duo, in their attempts to win at any cost, are the real losers of these tales. While there are some worthy moral messages sprinkled throughout Friends and Rivals, be warned that they come mostly by way of violent showdowns between pocket monsters. Parents concerned about imitative behavior should remain cautious. --Lynn Gibson
Pokemon - Totally Togepi (Vol. 16): This video features three more episodes from the popular Pokémon TV series. In "So Near, Yet So Farfetch'd," the bird Pokémon of the title is elusive prey for Brock, Misty, and Ash. But the mysterious master of this Pokémon is even more of a puzzler. Fans will be surprised by who saves the day. In the second segment, the egg Brock has carried since a previous episode finally hatches and the first of the new Pokémon is born, a cutie pie named Togepi. This starts a grand match to find out who will carry the new Pokémon, including Team Rocket. When Bulbasaur looks to evolve, there's more than meets the eye in "The Mysterious Garden." Along the way in this trio of adventures, an upgraded Pokédex is delivered and Team Rocket wins the day. OK, just kidding about the last part--Team Rocket will always fail in its inevitable way. Pokemon Movie - The Rise of Darkrai: The 10th Pokémon movie introduces Dialga and Palkia, two Legendary Pokémon from the "Diamond" and "Pearl" versions of the game. Ash, Brock, Dawn, and Pikachu visit the town of Alamos, which is dominated by two lofty towers that represent space and time. Alamos has been plagued by nightmares and supernatural events that the arrogant Baron Alberto blames on Darkrai, a powerful and elusive Pokémon. Alice, a gentle musician whose grandmother discovered Darkrai, disagrees. Her professor friend Tonio proves the escalating problems are caused by a clash between Dialga and Palkia. Unless the humans find a way to end this battle, the space-time fabric will tear and Alamos will be thrown into another dimension. Ash and Pikachu save the day, with some help from Dawn and Alice. The Rise of Darkrai (2007) is most the elaborate Pokémon feature to date: the CG effects range from the graceful towers to fireworks and energy storms. The drawn characters and computer-generated special effects are better integrated than in the previous features. The results are sure to delight Pokémon fans.
