New Pokemon | Pokemon - (Notice more reviews and other videos at the top)
Taken on its own terms, Pokémon is an agreeable if somewhat cutesy children's entertainment that emphasizes friendship, perseverance, and good sportsmanship. These new adventures (the third television series) take Ash, Misty, and Brock to the land of Johto, where they encounter new Pokémon and people, including Professor Elm, a former student of Professor Oak. (Professor Elm gives first-time trainers their initial Pokémon in Johto.) In "The Double Trouble Header," Ash is challenged by Casey, a novice trainer, after he dismisses her favorite baseball team. The comic villains Team Rocket (Jessie, James, and Meowth) trick Casey into demanding a rematch so they can kidnap Pikachu and Chikorita. When Team Rocket's scheme inevitably backfires, Ash and Casey part as friends. Woodruff the Forest Ranger offers a lesson in ecology in "A Sappy Ending." Team Rocket has built a robot to collect the sweet tree sap several types of Pokémon live on, upsetting the ecological balance of the local forest. Ash, Misty, and Brock help Woodruff route the villains and acquire a Heracross as a bonus. Suitable for all ages. --Charles Solomon
Cross-dressing, hypnosis, and cutthroat practices in the fashion industry all make their appearances in this installment of the phenomenally successful Japanese cartoon series. In "Pokémon Scent-Station," Ash dresses as "Ashley" to get into a local gym after he is banned for insulting the managers' perfume line. His ruse is discovered and he challenges the teacher to a Pokémon duel, pitting his baby-voiced Pikachu against her sour-smelling creature. Children are disappearing and Pokémon are losing their energy in "Hypno's Naptime," until Ash, Misty, and Brock solve the mystery. In "Pokémon Fashion Flash," the final episode of this 75-minute tape culled from the rudimentally animated television series, Brock attempts to cozy up to a beautiful Pokémon breeder whose business is threatened by Pokémon fashion makeovers. Through it all, Team Rocket is causing the usual mayhem: starting fires, stealing business secrets, and thwarting all that is noble and good. Defending order are the three kids, Pikachu, and various other Pokémon, including Gloom, Psyduck, and Hypno. Followed by Fighting Tournament. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Thanks to a greedy Pokémon collector, Earth's weather patterns are askew and its population doomed unless Pokémon trainer Ash can return three glass balls to their proper place in this second Pokémon feature. Unlike the television show, the movie features little violence and no Pokémon battles in the classic sense. Instead, the focus is an environmental one: what happens when humans interfere with the harmony of Earth's elements--in this case fire, ice, and lightning. Even Team Rocket have a (temporary, to be sure) change of heart, joining Ash and Misty in their effort to free the three imprisoned birdlike Pokémon who regulate those elements. The good intentions of this 76-minute film, however, don't make it any less dull for grownups (even though this feature is better than the first). Even more mind-numbing than the feature is the lead-in short, "Pikachu's Rescue Adventure," in which Pikachu and Pokémon friends follow Team Rocket's feline down a hole into a Munchkinland-type place. Without the humans for dialogue, viewers must endure a full 20 minutes of nothing but the squawks and squeaks of pocket monsters. As the movie's title song says, "We all live in a Pokémon world." (Ages 3 and older.) --Kimberly Heinrichs
Ash, Misty, and Brock are on their way to the Violet City in "Roll On, Pokémon," when they encounter a rock slide caused by Donphans on the prowl for Amberite. Ash and Brock try to catch a young Donphan only to discover that it already has an owner. Team Rocket then kidnaps the same Donphan, who subsequently proves itself unprepared to find Amberite. Can Ash, Brock, and Misty rescue the Donphan and return it to its rightful owner? The trio find themselves lost in a spooky forest where nothing is quite as it appears in "Illusion Confusion." The group is forced to look to a Hoothoot with a dismal track record as their only hope of seeing clearly enough to escape the forest. "Flower Power" opens with Ash, Brock, and Misty entering Florando the day before a Pokémon exhibition. A pair of dancing Bellossums transfixes the group with their desperate attempts to perfect a "loop-de-loop" for the upcoming exhibition and then teaches Pikachu some fancy footwork. Team Rocket steals the Bellossums, but the dancing Pokémon perfect their "loop-de-loop" just in time to save themselves. Join Ash, Brock, and Misty for 105 minutes of exciting Johto journeys and discover some amazing new gold and silver Pokémon along the way. (Ages 5 to 10) --Tami Horiuchi
